South West London extension and remodel

The brief for Simon Gill Architects for this project in Putney was to completely transform the ground floor of this red-brick detached house, create a larger dining room and better connect the inside of the home with the garden.

The end result is a complete transformation of the ground floor, gone are the compressed spaces and smaller rooms and in their place is a large open-plan living area with seamless connection between the lounge, kitchen and dining room.

These open plan spaces are filled with natural light thanks to a combination of Grand Slider II sliding doors and large fixed frame windows. The dining room features a large 4-panel set of sliding doors on a triple track that are 2.8m high, with the doors sliding to one end and being partially hidden between a brick return on the outside.

In the living area two huge fixed frame windows (3.4m and 2.3m wide x 2.4m high) connected with a single glazed access door help to break down the boundaries between inside and out, making the whole ground floor of the house feel much lighter and more spacious.

The white ceramic faced bricks of the extension perfectly contrast perfectly with the red-brick of the existing structure, whilst the doors and aluminium cladding is coloured in RAL 7048 Pearl Mouse Grey matt finish to complement both the interior and exterior finishes.
